A mechanism for the formation of ball lightning is discussed. It is suggested that the presence of a low density of simple hydrocarbons in the atmosphere, coupled with an atmospheric electrical discharge, may be sufficient to form the phenomenon. A simple calculation establishes a theoretical diameter of approximately 6-130 cm. A laboratory experiment is described in which a ball of fire was formed. The phenomenon appeared to possess many properties of natural ball lightning, including existence for a finite time without an external energy source.
