We are planning x-ray measurement on NSTX that address questions raised by recent spectral observations of astrophysical sources by the Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray Observatories. To this aim, we are implementing a compact, high-resolution (λ/Δλ ≈ 2000) vacuum crystal spectrometer viewing the NSTX plasma along a vertical sight line. Employing different crystals the instrument covers the 7--20 Å region. This region contains the K-shell emission lines from O, Ne, and Mg as well the L-shell emission from Fe and Ni, providing the most intense emission in Chandra and XMM spectra. We will discuss the instrument and present a list of planned measurements. This work was performed under the auspices of the U.S. DOE by UC-LLNL under contract W-7405-Eng-48 and by PPPL under contract DE-AC02-76CHO3073.
