This chapter is a summary of lectures intended to introduce the concept of scaling to graduate students. Specifically, we address whether astrophysical phenomena may be addressed using ‘scaled’ versions of the same processes in experiments in the laboratory. Recent (and ongoing) advances in laser facility capabilities, such as higher temperatures and Mach numbers, are making such scaled hydrodynamical and even magneto-hydrodynamical experiments possible. The general concept of scaling, relevant equations, and some applications are presented.
