The self-organization of large-scale quantities through fluctuating magnetic fields underlies many important processes in laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. These processes include dynamos, momentum transport, reconnection, ion heating, and energy transport along chaotic fields. The macroscopic behavior of laboratory experiments such as the reversed field pinch and spheromak configurations is largely determined by such processes. They also occur in a wide range of astrophysical situations over a vast range of spatial scales. A challenge is to identify the physics that is shared by the various settings. This talk will focus on the similarities and differences between magnetic self-organization in the lab and astrophysics.
