Insights obtained from MHD stability theory of tokamaks, in particular concerning methods of dealing with constraints and singular modes, pertaining to the dynamics of coronal loops are reviewed. In tokamaks external kink modes are stabilized by the geometric constraint that the modes should fit into the torus. In current-carrying coronal loops the opposite problem arises: the apparent absence of external kink modes, as evidenced by their long life-time, spanning many orders of magnitude of the characteristic growth-time of these instabilities. Anchoring of the foot points of the field lines in the photosphere is generally considered to be the agent responsible for stabilization. This effect is analogous to that of the stabilization of external kink modes in a tokamak by means of RF fields induced by a poloidal antenna structure. Given the overall MHD stability of a coronal magnetic loop structure, analysis of Alfven wave heating by means of the continuous spectrum may be undertaken. Here, an additional complication is encountered which turns out to be quite beneficial though from the point of view of heating efficiency: the crossing of the stable branch of the external kink mode through the continuous spectrum. This gives rise to improper modes which have both a global character and a non-integrable part which admits quasi-dissipation.
