Assuming that the direction of flow is parallel to the applied magnetic field, conditions are defined on which the boundary layer can exist in static equilibrium at any flow speed. They are not met at the Earth's magnetopause, but could apply at similar boundaries in laboratory plasmas. Granted these conditions, the small scale structure of the layer was calculated by means of a simplified kinetic theory and results are presented for a hydrogen plasma with equal electron and ion velocity. The question of the stability of these structures remains open.
