2736 Magnetosphere/Ionosphere Interactions
Scientific paper
Motivated by the recent insight gained from spacecraft and laboratory studies concerning the role of Alfven waves having small transverse scale, and by significant advances in theory and modeling, kinetic simulations of Alfvenic interactions that play a role in the electrodynamic coupling of the high latitude ionosphere and the magnetosphere have been undertaken. This study utilizes a recently developed parallel PIC code (OSIRIS). The electromagnetic code is capable of simulating the self-consistent propagation of shear and compressional modes excited from a remote boundary in the presence of narrow density irregularities and/or non-Maxwellian distributions. This presentation will focus on the nonlinear interactions associated with large amplitude shear modes in both the inertial and kinetic regimes. Particular attention is placed on the generation of electron streams and on the formation of density structures with transverse scale on the order of the electron-skin depth. Sponsored by ONR and NSF
