Although high-mass stars undoubtedly play a crucial role in determining the kinematics/energies of clusters, the interstellar medium and whole galaxies, the initial conditions of massive star formation still remain relatively unexplored. To overcome this gap, we initiated a Herschel guaranteed time project to study very young massive Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs) in the far-infrared. However, an important missing ingredient are spatially resolved spectral line data to study the gas kinematics and turbulence. Hence, we propose to map a sub-sample of 18 regions -- covering high-mass starless cores as well as IRDCs with very young embedded protostars -- with the Mopra telescope in cold gas tracing molecular lines (e.g., N2H+, SiO, CCH). The main scientific goals of this project are: (a) Constraining the global kinematics of the young high-mass star-forming clouds to investigate current cloud formation scenarios (e.g., turbulent flows), (b) Investigating turbulence differences between massive star-forming and starless clouds, (c) Comparing virial masses with gas masses derived from the Herschel data to constrain the gravitational stability, (d) Investigating the presence or absence of molecular outflows, and (e) Studying the chemical properties at different but early evolutionary stages.
