The hydromagnetic Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is investigated theoretically, with a focus on the case where a finitely conducting and a nonconducting fluid are superimposed and in relative motion, with neutral particles providing a density discontinuity. Both horizontal and vertical magnetic fields are considered, and the derivation of the governing equations is given in detail. It is found that the growth rate varies with the cube root of the finite resistivity in all cases, since the neutral particles affect only the proportionality constant.
