Sample calculations based on satellite measurement of proton precipitation at an altitude of 450 nautical miles indicate that intense fluxes of K-shell X-rays from nitrogen and oxygen result from the more energetic proton precipitation events. In particular, K-shell X-ray production by proton impact on nitrogen and oxygen is significant when energy levels above a few tens of keV are involved. The fact that the protons create no bremsstrahlung continuum makes the X-ray emission from precipitating protons readily distinguishable from that due to precipitating electrons.
