Two computer techniques for determining the three-hour-range indices (called K-indices) of geomagnetic activity are described. The first technique relies on a high-pass numerical filter to remove most of the non-K variations from a digital magnetic record. The second is a simulation of the visual scaling method. When applied to routine five-minute digital data, the two techniques yield similar results.
