The measurement of cosmological parameters from Type Ia supernovae depends on the accuracy of the K-correction calculation. We quantify the redshift dependent K-correction errors associated with the present technique of K-correction calculation by comparing colour corrected templates with a library of 500 high quality Type Ia supernova spectra. It is shown that spectroscopic differences between supernovae cause systematic errors; supernovae with the same colours do not necessarily have the same K-corrections. The large sample size of the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS) will reduce statistical errors to the point where these K-correction errors become important. We present a new set of templates where each of the spectroscopic feature strength is determined from the weighted mean of the library of spectra. We also relate the spectroscopic patterns of supernovae between epochs and to light curve parameters. The spectroscopic sequence and the statistically determined templates present a new method for calculating Type Ia supernova K-corrections and will reduce the errors caused by spectroscopic differences between supernovae.
