Remote observations of the auroral emissions from Jupiter and Saturn have contributed strongly to magnetospheric studies by the Galileo and Cassini missions. The auroral images give the “big picture” of the state of the magnetosphere, while an orbiting spacecraft can record in great detail the local conditions. Proposed missions to Europa and Ganymede would provide much greater detail on the nature of the magnetospheric interaction of those two satellites, with the potential for initial mission orbits that pass through other interesting and previously unexplored regions of the jovian magnetosphere. As a result of recent concentrated campaigns of observations of Jupiter, much progress has been made toward understanding in detail the nature of the magnetospheric interactions of the Galilean satellites. Specifically, variations in the brightness of the magnetic footprint auroral emissions on different time scales are revealing the relative importance of different elements of the interaction with local co-rotating plasma and Jupiter’s magnetic field. This presentation will be a brief review of prior observations of Jupiter’s aurora, with an emphasis on the auroral emissions from the magnetic footprints of the satellites, with a summary of what we have learned and initial thoughts on the contributions that these future missions might make.
