On 7 December 1995, the Galileo spacecraft arrived at Jupiter after two decades of toil and a remarkable 6-year, 3.5-billion-km journey through the solar system. This mission studies Jupiter's atmosphere, satellites, and magnetosphere. This article is perspective of the mission as viewed by the Energetic Particles Detector Team at the Applied Physics Laboratory over the history of the project. The author describes the overall mission and the Galileo Energetic Particles Detector.
