Crustal magnetism arises from magnetism held in rocks after their cooling below the Curie point - remanent magnetism - and an induced magnetism related to the field imposed from the core. Distinguishing between the two remains a challenge, but one that can be addressed thanks to data secured by William Bullerwell, among others. Comparisons between 19th- and 20th-century datasets for the British Isles, and comparison with field models show the value of historical magnetic surveys, especially where measurements are repeated at intervals at the same stations. Anomalies that persist over a century or so are likely to indicate remanent magnetism, for example. It is hoped that continuing work with these data will prove of lasting value.
