Background information on all the low resolution International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectra of dwarf novae and nova-like stars taken until the end of 1987 is presented. The work is performed in order to enable optimum usage of the low resolution IUE - ULDA (uniform low dispersion archive). Details on the individual exposures and their position in the outburst light curves are given. Physical information about each system, and a comprehensive list of references for published observations in all wavelength ranges, are provided. In particular, the following topics are also considered: description of the data, system parameters, the American Association of Variable Star Observers light curves and published IUE observations.
