We propose to observe close binary systems whose accretion disks are viewed nearly edge-on in order to resolve several outstanding problem concerning the continuum flux distribution of these stars and the origin and nature of their spectral lines. Specific problems that will be addressed are: the origin of the UV emission lines; the conditions under which an outflowing wind is observed; the brightness distribution of the accretion disk; the shape of the hard X-ray spectrum; and the reality of a third periodicity in the continuum flux of a double-period, eclipsing, close binary in which magnetic fields are thought to be important.
