The infrared satellite ISO has, for the first time, allowed us to obtain complete spectra from 2.5 to 196 μ m together with detailed spectroscopy over this wavelength range for a variety of astronomical sources. This paper describes SWS-LWS ISO grating spectra of galactic dense star-forming regions. The diversity of the infrared spectra of compact H II regions is discussed and new results on the galactic abundance gradient are presented. The effects of absorption can be important even in the far-infrared as shown by the spectra of deeply embedded infrared sources and the data obtained on Sgr B2.
