We report preliminary results of a study of the combined SWS-LWS grating spectra of compact HII regions in our Galaxy. The main goal of this study is to investigate the galactic abundance gradient. First results are presented together with a discussion of the problems and limitations of the present data set. In addition to the atomic fine-structure lines, the spectra show a variety of dust features whose main characteristics are summarized.
