Calculations are presented that show the significant interference of laser-generated OH in ambient air with tropospheric OH if the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) technique is used. A comparison of measurements with results of calculations indicates that the measured tropospheric OH concentration is within the order of magnitude of laser-generated OH. It seems doubtful that the LIF method using 282-nm radiation can be successfully employed for the probing of OH in the troposphere. The main difficulty involves high O(1D) production from the probing laser radiation.
