The value of any model is always enhanced by an awareness of its limitations and it is this aspect of teaching which is too often overlooked. The philosophy of simple mechanistic theories is fundamentally different from that implied by the newer concepts of quantum mechanics and, whilst it might not be desirable to teach this subject formally at A-level, it would be good to develop an awareness of the revolutionary ideas of complementarity and correspondence which throw so much light on one's very way of thinking. The author explores preconceptions about what can be 'real' and describes the strangeness of the Universe as modelled by quantum theory. It goes on to suggest that the experience of physicists during this century ought to open our eyes to new types of theory in many diverse fields.
