RXJ 0720.4-3125 is a bright soft X-ray source with a period of 8 s. Our Keck observations reveal a faint blue optical counterpart. We argue that the X-ray source must be a nearby neutron star which is either accreting from the ISM or a cooling magnetar. These two models bear distinctive spectral signatures: in the first case the surface emission is modified by the accreted gas whereas in the second case the iron surface is severely affected by super strong magnetic field strengths. A single LETG/HRC observation will confirm the proposed optical counterpart and enable us to uncover the nature of the source. Regardless of the models, this object -- one of the nearest neutron stars with an anomalous period -- is bound to be fascinating.
