The ability to collect and archive data has changed dramatically over the past 150 years. From the early historical collections which provided snapshots in space and time to the current and future collections which can be 24 hours/day every day of the year, data collection has outstripped our ability to disseminate this information to the public or the educational community. The amount of data available now can be likened to a trickle of water from a sink faucet while the amount of data likely to be coming soon from the Ocean Observatory Initiative (OOI) will be like water streaming out of a fire hydrant left wide open 24 hours a day. This presentation will review the Ocean Observatory Initiative here in the US and elsewhere as well as present some programs that are already starting to serve as a conduit between educators and the data.
