The current state of research on the morphology and physics of storms in the F2 region is reviewed. It is shown that the morphology of the negative storm phase is understood in its general features, although there are significant differences of opinion concerning details. The morphology of the positive phase is not as well understood; there are fundamental differences of opinion concerning the seasonal dependence of the occurrence of the positive phase and its connection with changes in the height of the F2-layer maximum. The physics of the negative phase is connected with Joule heating in the auroral oval, leading to a decrease in the O/N2 ratio in the F2 region along with a corresponding decrease in electron density and F2-region critical frequency. It is suggested that the formation of the negative and positive phases is connected with different channels of magnetospheric-ionospheric interaction.
