The characteristics of the ionospheric storm that occurred on December 4-6, 1958, in the Indian sector are investigated using published data from 10 ionospheric stations distributed from high midlatitudes to dip equator. It is shown that in addition to the well-known positive effects in f0F2 caused by a weakening of the electrojet, negative effects in f0F2 with prominent increases in height of F2-layer also occurred during the storm. It is suggested that changes in atmospheric neutral composition, that is, increased N2/O and O2/O ratios, are the principal causes of the negative effects in f0F2 in the electrojet region.
