Radar observations of ionospheric convection, conductivities, and currents over a wide range of latitudes are described at a time when the auroral oval and polar cap were somewhat expanded. During the event reported, the region of strong northward convection electric field in the premidnight sector shifted equatorward during substorm intensification. As seen at a fixed latitude, this equatorward shift produced a dramatic increase in the magnitude of the convection electric field as the eastward electrojet current increased. Poleward of this, in the region of westward electrojet current, only slight enhancements of the convection electric field accompanied the greatly increased current during the substorms. Precipitation enhanced ionospheric conductivity accounted for the bulk of the current enhancement.
