The paper reports observations of equatorial ionization bubbles by means of Faraday rotation using signals transmitted by SMS 1 at 136.379 MHz and received at Natal, Brazil. In a two-hour period (October 15, 1978) five isolated bubbles were identified. The depleted total electron content for one such bubble is 2.2 x 10 to the 16th electrons/sq m and the east-west dimension is about 72 km. This translates to a total depletion of 1.6 x 10 to the 21st electrons/m in the north-south direction.
