Characteristics of x wave absorption are investigated by using the phase integral method. For various noon models of the mid-latitude ionosphere, empirical relations are derived to represent the dependence on wave frequency, dip angle, and gyrofrequency, and to take account of seasonal changes. A quantitative relationship between x wave and o wave absorption is established.
