A theoretical model is presented for the ionization of an optically transparent barium cloud under solar irradiation in the visible and near-UV ranges. Consideration is given to a large number of intermediate states associated with the population of metastable Ba I levels. The effective ionization time of Ba by solar radiation is calculated to be 66 sec. The experimentally observed value of this parameter is probably connected with the effect of dynamic processes on the ionization of Ba I in the ionosphere.
