The transition between the hyperfine levels F = 1, m(sub F) = 0 and F = 0, m(sub F) = 0 in the ground state of 171-Yb(+) is investigated as a reference transition for a trapped ion frequency standard. A description of the experimental setup and the measurement procedure is given. The line was recorded with a linewidth of 16 MHz. Results of the frequency instability and the first steps of an evaluation of the uncertainty contributions are given.
