Results of positive ion composition measurements in the lower ionosphere are presented and discussed for different seasons and latitudes. Special attention is given to the variability and its origin of the transition height of molecular ions to proton hydrates. The measurements are discussed with the present knowledge of positive D region ion chemistry. Inconsistencies between models and measurements are given and discussed in connection with proposed modification of the D region ion chemistry.
