Earth Ionosphere: Ion Composition, Earth Ionosphere: Solar Activity Cycles
Scientific paper
Mass-spectrometer and probe data on absolute and relative concentrations of O+, N+, H+, and He+ ions, total ion concentrations, and electron temperatures were obtained on the Interkosmos-24 satellite under quiescent geomagnetic conditions during the maximum period of the 22nd solar activity cycle. Increased concentrations and temperatures were observed during this period. In the sunlit perigee region, the O+ concentration reached (1 - 3)×106cm-3 at invariant latitudes of ±35°. Under these conditions the ion temperature Ti was 1200 - 1500K and the electron temperature was 2000 - 3000K. In the main ionospheric trough region at altitudes on the order of 1000 km, the electron temperature often increased to 6000 - 7000K; during the night it decreased by 500K. In the equatorial region, the geomagnetic anomaly is often clearly expressed with peaks in the ion concentration roughly at ±15° constant latitude. The O+-H+ transition level increased with increasing latitudes on both the dayside and the nightside. It was noted that He+ ions often exceeded H+ and O+ ions by an order of magnitude at constant latitudes above 70°.
