The stability of the current sheet arising at the outer boundary of the earth's liquid core is studied numerically, where the sheet parameters are chosen in accordance with the Z geodynamo model. Attention is given to the plane problem which takes into account the radial field, the nonuniform azimuthal field, and strong nonuniform rotation characteristic for the Z model. Numerical results indicate the existence of an instability with a characteristic period of 100 years. It is shown that this instability may be a significant part of the mechanism for the appearance of observed short-period magnetic-field variations.
