Emission coefficients of shock-tube plasmas were measured between 400 and 600 nm. The xi-factor for the pure continuum was calculated after subtracting the line emission. The plasma state was determined by using two-wavelength laser interferometry. The dependence of xi on the wavelength and plasma state at N(e) = (4.2-15) x 10 to the 22nd/cu m is discussed. It is shown that many of the discrepancies between the previously published experimental results are due to neglect of the contributions of line emissions.
