The characteristics of cascade showers generated by the interaction of high-energy muons with iron nuclei were studied in an underground facility including an eight-layer ionization calorimeter with an iron absorber. The spatial ionization distributions at the peak of the development of electromagnetic and short cascades were compared for the portion of cascades studied (115 of them) with energies exceeding 1 TeV. It is shown that the ionization distribution in short cascades is wider than that in electromagnetic cascades, which points to the different characters of these cascades.
