We test a model of the Earth's crust by transforming the observed vertical component of the teleseismic P-wave record into the synthetic radial component and comparing this with the observed radial component. The optimum model can be found by minimizing the RMS difference between the synthetic radial component and the observed one for a number of records in the time intervals several tens of seconds long. We applied this method to long-period records of NORSAR and some other seismograph stations in Fennoscandia. The search for the optimum models was performed by trial and error and by application of the iterative procedure based on the general method of solution of the ill-posed inverse problems (Tikhonov and Arsenin). In comparison with the conventional spectral-ratio analysis, our techniques are more flexible and demonstrate a higher resolving power. It is found that in the NORSAR siting area the crustal thicknesses are regulated by the variations of thickness of the `granite' layer, which dominates in the crust. This observation explains peculiarities of the gravity field in the Oslo-graben region. A similar relation between the parameters of the crust is found in the eastern part of Fennoscandia.
