Adaptive Optics is a technology to correct ground-based telescope images for the blurring effects of atmospheric turbulence. Based on peer-reviewed science papers, adaptive optics (AO) and laser guide stars have now entered the mainstream of observational astrophysics. This talk is aimed at astronomers who want to find out more about what AO can do for their science programs. It will review the basic concepts of AO operation, describe current capabilities, outline the limitations of today's AO instruments, and give a glimpse of developments that can be expected in the future.
