An investigation is presented of the grain-grain collisions which have been hypothesized by Biermann and Harwit (1980) to occur in cool circumstellar envelopes, and to be responsible for the interstellar grain size spectrum. A fragmentation theory is presented, on the basis of which it is shown that size distributions resulting from such collisions are of a type describable by an n(a) varies as a to the -p power law. The exponent p ranges from 3.4 to 3.7 in the steady-state case, in agreement with grain size spectra derived from the interstellar extinction curve.
