Interstellar dust models are reviewed, emphasizing inadequate knowledge of grain properties at submillimeter wavelengths. The relevance of submillimeter continuum measurements is illustrated by discussing the determination of cloud masses, the derivation of matter distribution in star forming regions, and the search for protostars. The benefits excepted from measurements with the ESA Far Infrared Submillimeter Space Telescope are indicated. Ways in which continuum data can complement the analysis of spectroscopic measurements are considered.
