Excitation and radiation transport processes are discussed for typical observing situations in the submillimeter astronomy of molecules. The discussion uses examples of linear molecules, such as CO and HD and more complex molecules, H2O and CH3CN. One of the major points which emerges is the increased interaction between dust and molecular excitation as compared with the situation in the millimeter band.
