The background for two interstellar communication strategies, radio and messenger probes, is reviewed. A metric is suggested to allow relative evaluation of general communication modes. This metric is to be applicable to a systematic contact strategy wherein a great many nearby star systems receive consideration. The metric is applied to the classic radio communication case and then to an initial probe case. It is concluded that serious consideration is warranted for near-term probe use.
