Some historical notes concerning early observations of interstellar lines are given. Major differences between optical and UV lines are discussed. High resolution observations of interstellar sodium lines are presented, and the analysis of these, aiming at the determination of some interesting properties of diffuse interstellar clouds, is discussed.
