Formulas are obtained for the equivalent width and profile of a weak absorption line in a planetary spectrum as a function of phase angle. It is assumed that the planetary atmosphere consists of an optically thin layer above the clouds and a cloud layer of infinitely large optical depth with an arbitrary scattering indicatrix. Calculated reflection factors are used to investigate the effect of scattering indicatrix on the phase dependence of the weak line's equivalent width and profile. Theoretical and observed phase variations of the equivalent widths of several weak CO2 absorption lines in the spectrum of Venus are compared. The results are employed to estimate the number of CO2 molecules in the layer above the clouds and the relative density of these molecules in the cloud layer of Venus.
