To study the orientation of the tectonic stress in the Earth's crust, we used physical modelling. This method takes advantage of a wide variety of experiments on fault models which were uniaxially loaded. To compare the results of laboratory experiments with the behaviour of actual seismoactive fault systems, we used the commonly available tectonic and seismic information: the structure of fault systems and principal parameters of seismic events, i.e. location, origin time and magnitude. The possibilities of physical modelling to reconstruct the tectonic stress orientation in actual fault zones are demonstrated on examples from northwestern China, the Bear Valley section of the San Andreas fault and from West Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. Despite several restrictions, which up to now have limited the use of the method, physical modelling seems to be promising, as even complicated patterns of seismic energy release can be explained by means of simple tectonic conditions.
