A model of ionosphere-plasmasphere interaction is used to calculate the electron density and temperature for the geomagnetic stroms of 15-17 June 1965 (low solar activity) and 16-18 Aug. 1970 (high solar activity). For the negative disturbance of 16 June 1965 an additional source for the heating of plasmspheric electrons is introduced in the MSIS-86 model to make electron densities and vertical gradients of electron temperature measured at Millstone-Hill agree with theoretical calculations. In order to make the measured and calculated values of electron density agree without correction of the model, it is necessary to take into account the effects of vibrationally excited nitrogen, N2*.
