A series of anomalous events associated with solar activity are discussed which occurred in interplanetary space in June and August 1972. The events include interplanetary shock waves detected by Pioneers 9 and 10, Heos 2, Prognoz, and Prognoz 2; sudden commencements of geomagnetic storms; interplanetary scintillations; non-Io-associated decametric emission from Jupiter; and brightness variations of the periodic comets Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 and Giacobini-Zinner. Trajectory and deceleration characteristics are estimated from solar radio, on-site, and geomagnetic observations. The trajectories are found to be essentially those of piston-driven shock waves out to about 0.3 to 0.4 AU; beyond this distance, the shocks decayed to a blastlike motion with a shock velocity variation approximately inversely proportional to the heliocentric radius. Most of the shock waves apparently decayed into magnetoacoustic waves between 2 and 4 AU. It is suggested that this decay explains the lack of anomalous events at either Jupiter (5.2 AU) or P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 (5.6 AU) during August 1972.
