The paper discusses the general goals of the International Magnetospheric Study (IMS), a program for coordinating a large number of studies of magnetospheric phenomena. The structure of the program will be kept loose and will cover studies of geophysical processes in polar regions, plasmasphere problems, formation of the plasmapause, and the interaction between electromagnetic and corpuscular radiation fields. Some of the satellites to be used in these studies are briefly described.
