Experimental data are presented which indicate similar and synchronous fluctuations in the ionospheric electron concentration maximum and in the intensity of the near-field UV radiation recorded at ground stations located far from one another. This phenomenon cannot be explained in the context of the internal gravity wave theory. The working hypothesis proposed here is that solar radiation fluctuations are capable of producing wave perturbations in the ionosphere. The causes and mechanisms of the observed synchronicity, however, remain unclear.
