The extensive theoretical and experimental program described in this report has substantially increased our understanding of many aspects of the intermediate state in superconductors. Fundamental areas contributed to include: basic energetics, growth and stability of flux structures, local magnetic fields in the intermediate state, surface energies of zinc, aluminum and mercury and electrically and thermally induced flux motion. In addition, a related technical investigation of the resistance of normal metal contacts on superconductors holds promise of extensive application to the practically important area of type II superconductivity.
