Expected developments in numerical analysis and prediction in the early 1990s are presented from the viewpoint of a meteorological institute located in the southern hemisphere. The anticipated advances are grouped into four key areas: observations, data analysis and assimilation, numerical modelling techniques, and model output diagnostics. Attention will be focused on the intermediate range, defined here as the period between 12 hours and three days, using as broad guidelines the outstanding problems facing numerical meteorology and the major new areas of change planned for the 1990s.
